The September 2008 Tour
The Oakville Horticultural Society presented Through Our Garden Gate, our fall garden Tour. This is a new event for us, as the society is known for the summer garden tour.
Featured on this tour will be a diverse selection of gardens showcasing beautiful plants and early autumn colour. You will have the unique opportunity to visit a selection of O.H.S. members’ gardens, and, we will also be providing demonstrations and other resources to both inspire you and to help you with your garden.
We are happy to announce that Tom Bradley will be in one of the gardens. Tom is a noted arbourist, who has been involved in horticulture for over 20 years. Tom teaches at Sheridan College in the Horticultural program. He will be available to field your questions on your trees, what dangers they face and how you can help keep them healthy. As you may know, the Emerald Ash Borer is now in Oakville; this invader threatens all ash trees.
Also, we are pleased to have Belinda Gallagher in the gardens. Belinda is a Master Gardener with the Halton Region group, an instructor with Landscape Ontario, certified Horticultural and Design judge, co-editor of the Ontario Rock Garden Society Journal, and noted garden lecturer. She owns and operates Triffids Plants in Georgetown, a specialized nursery that features native and nearly native plants.
Her current passion is serving on the Board of Directors of the Royal Botanical Gardens. Belinda will have a display of native plants for our gardens here in Oakville. As well, she will be bringing some of her favourite plants for fall planting along with in-depth culture and these will be available for purchase.
Plus, we will have representatives from Master Gardeners of Halton in the gardens. We will have demonstrations of preparing for the fall planting of your spring bulbs. As well, there will be a workshop for lifting dividing and correctly planting irises to ensure maximum flower blooming.
We invite you to linger in the gardens, and take the time to discuss how various gardening challenges can be approached.
If you should know of a noteworthy garden please feel free to contact the Garden Tour committee.
